The International Herald Tribune publishes another article
for against Bulgaria. Headlined “Bulgarian businessman claims officials demanded kickbacks”, it shows the worst of journalism.
I’ve blogged before about the biased way IHT described Bulgaria back in October – November 2008, but it seems the newspaper will not stop with articles about my country, which are based on sources, who do not deserve trust.
However, the average reader of the IHT has no way to find out the truth, and they will consider Bulgaria the way it is described in the article.
The article claims that a Bulgarian, Tihomir Kamenov “sought a European review because he had reached “legal exhaustion” in Bulgaria”, but it does not tell us what is this “legal exhaustion”. This alone would have been enough for a newspaper, to have doubts in the claims by Mr. Kamenov, but the IHT is well known for not having any doubts when writing about Bulgaria.
Here is how one could usually work, if he or she is approached by some official with request to pay money under the table: the person goes to the police, gets some marked banknotes, and delivers them. Then the official is arrested, and faces criminal case in court.
The IHT does not ask Mr. Kamenov why he didn’t do that. They accept him as a reliable source. I wouldn’t. But then, after all, may be that’s why I don’t work for the IHT.
Deputy-minister of health Emil Raynov has published a statement, where he says, among other words, describing in details why Mr. Kamenov blames him,
“С мен се свърза г-жа Дорин Карваял – кореспондент на ??нтерне??ънал Хералд Трибюн за Европа, От думите й разбрах, че същите клеветнически твърдения са налице и в редакцията на този вестник. Разбрах също така, че за съжаление редакцията се готви първо да публикува всичко това, а след това да ми даде думата за излагане на моето мнение по повдигнатите въпроси.”
Translation: Ms. Doreen Carvajal – IHT correspondent for Europe got in touch with me. I understood that the smear campaign has reached the newspaper. I understood also, that they are ready to publish all this first, and then give me the opportunity to express my opinion on this issue”.
